The first study subject established was the so-called "general studies" with seven disciplines – grammar, rhetoric, dialectic, arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy – completed by theology, medicine and jurisprudence.

The formerly new founded institutions in Bologna (1088), Paris (1150) or Oxford were the first to establish this study subject. The collectivity of all sciences was called "universitas litterarum". No need to study abroad if all subjects are equal…
