U-Multirank's unique 'Sunburst chart' gives an illustration of a university's performance profile across the five U-Multirank dimensions. These are indicated in different colours. For instance, the teaching and learning dimension is symbolised by the colour green. Each 'sunray' represents one of the thirty plus U-Multirank indicators. The longer the ray, the better the performance of an institution on the selected indicator: a full-length ray stands for 'top group' performance, whereas a short ray means 'weak' performance. A missing sunray indicates that the specific data indicator is not available. An institution's performance in an indicator can be identified by moving the cursor over the rays. A key guard for the sunburst chart is provided here .

The Department of Chemistry conducts research on all important fields of chemistry. For a long time, the core of "Mainz Chemistry" has been the research on macromolecules, which will continue to play an important role in the future. Meanwhile, almost unique in Germany is the access to a research reactor, which also allows studies of and with radioactive substances. Research on sustainable chemistry has also been brought into focus in recent years. Furthermore, there are various cooperations with industrial companies as well as with the non-university research institutes on campus.

Research-oriented master program in general biology with a high portion of experimental lab work, ideal for personal specialization as it offers elective modules in all four semesters. All combinations of disciplines of biology represented at the University of Mainz can be chosen. Two disciplines are studied in-depth for an entire semester each and two more theoretically. Extended qualifications in the third semester are followed by project work and master thesis. Change of disciplines between project work and master thesis is possible but not mandatory.
