A major strength of the department is the excellent supervision of students due to the comparatively small ratio of students to professors in chemistry. In addition to the usual student counseling, confidential counseling is offered by liaison officers, which mediate confidentially in situations of conflict and support the students.

The working groups in the department are involved in national and international research projects. Working groups in the Cµ research centre at the University of Siegen are also collaborating: The Cµ investigates how chemical processes occur on microscopic and nanoscopic length scales and at interfaces. Likewise, novel materials, methods and systems for micro- and nanochemistry are developed and this knowledge is used to design novel sensory interfaces and to develop new diagnostic approaches, e.g. for the detection of bacterial and fungal contaminations.
