U-Multirank's unique 'Sunburst chart' gives an illustration of a university's performance profile across the five U-Multirank dimensions. These are indicated in different colours. For instance, the teaching and learning dimension is symbolised by the colour green. Each 'sunray' represents one of the thirty plus U-Multirank indicators. The longer the ray, the better the performance of an institution on the selected indicator: a full-length ray stands for 'top group' performance, whereas a short ray means 'weak' performance. A missing sunray indicates that the specific data indicator is not available. An institution's performance in an indicator can be identified by moving the cursor over the rays. A key guard for the sunburst chart is provided here .

The sustainability of human society depends crucially on understanding the sustainability of the natural environment as society's foundation and the way to ensure its safety. Without limiting the focus of programs to the use and conservation of the living environment and the sustainability of eco-systems over the medium to long term, this department helps students to acquire the knowledge and skills required to take into account the environmental changes that have occurred throughout the history of the Earth and interactions with local communities.

In the chemistry and life science areas including an interdisciplinary Energy and Sustainable Chemistry area, we have three types of education programs, TED, PED and PSD. The TED program is a traditional course for researchers and engineers. The PED Program is designed to produce practical engineers and researchers who can turn innovations resulting from the advancement of sciences and technologies into advanced manufacturing. YNU's original PSD Program enables students to acquire various necessary skills in our industrial society through workshops and internships.

Undergraduate students learn Civil Engineering especially by dealing with issues related to the urban society from a broad perspective, such as disaster prevention, international cooperation, and environment coexistence. The curriculum consists of the basic scientific principles of civil engineering, also, urban design, policy decision, and infrastructure management. Our department is then aimed at fostering engineers, planners, and researchers, who can deal with many kinds of issues in the urban societies in wide viewpoint including natural disasters, environmental issues.

To his vocation of training in educational areas in the broad sense, the ESELx adds the consolidated experience of its teachers in acting in multidisciplinary teams. This experience, initially gained in supporting the professional practices only linked to formal education, was quickly extended to all courses that ESELx offers today and it is an established brand identity of its teachers. The multidisciplinary working team is part of the nature of the intervention of ESELx with all publics with which it works, whether students, cooperative or institutional partners.
