U-Multirank's unique 'Sunburst chart' gives an illustration of a university's performance profile across the five U-Multirank dimensions. These are indicated in different colours. For instance, the teaching and learning dimension is symbolised by the colour green. Each 'sunray' represents one of the thirty plus U-Multirank indicators. The longer the ray, the better the performance of an institution on the selected indicator: a full-length ray stands for 'top group' performance, whereas a short ray means 'weak' performance. A missing sunray indicates that the specific data indicator is not available. An institution's performance in an indicator can be identified by moving the cursor over the rays. A key guard for the sunburst chart is provided here .

Our programmes are designed to conform to international best practice with respect to curriculum, contents, and practical relevance. Students have a strong focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI), which prepares them well for both further study and specialisation in AI and the industry. Over the years, it has been very difficult to retain our double major and other students in graduate studies as they are highly sought after by the South African industries and attracted by high remuneration packages. This is a testament to the quality of programme.

Our first year Mathematics modules (Math 110/120) attempt to bridge the gap between ‘maths for use in other subjects’ and ‘maths as a discipline in its own right’. Applicable topics such as calculus, linear algebra and introductory combinatorics are taught, but as the course progresses, there is a gradual increase in the rigour with which these topics are treated, thereby ensuring that the students have exposure both to the activities of the pure mathematician and to the techniques required by the applied mathematician and other scientists.

Over the last 300 years, it has become clear that mathematics is an important subject in its own right, and not just a slave to other disciplines. Scientists have become aware that in order to develop powerful problemsolving tools, one needs quite ‘abstract’ mathematics; a body of pure mathematics is required which can be studied independently of physics, biology and other user-disciplines. Pure and Applied Mathematics are therefore offered as different subjects, although there is much interdependence between them and each serves as an inspiration to the other.

Mix of small group Problem Based Learning and Traditional Didactic Teaching. Results in better learning opportunities and self-directed exploration of topics beyond minimum requirement. Curriculum is horizontally and vertically integrated, theme concepts are introduced in earlier years, gradual increase in clinical and community contact during senior years, designed in a spiral manner, content covered in early years revisited in later years, with increasing depth. Candidates exposed to clinical situations and begin their clinical skills training in first year.

Research is centred around themes: Developmental and M ental Health; Lifestyle and Environment ; Trauma, Emergency and Rehabilitation;infectious Diseases; Applied Health Care and Health Systems; and Health Sciences Education. Apart from the research themes the Centre for the AIDS Programme in South Africa (CAPRISA) and the KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV (K-RITH)in the College results in a strong research pull towards TB and HIV research. Also a strong focus on use of medicinal plants in treatment of diabetes, malaria, febrile seizures & addiction.
