U-Multirank's unique 'Sunburst chart' gives an illustration of a university's performance profile across the five U-Multirank dimensions. These are indicated in different colours. For instance, the teaching and learning dimension is symbolised by the colour green. Each 'sunray' represents one of the thirty plus U-Multirank indicators. The longer the ray, the better the performance of an institution on the selected indicator: a full-length ray stands for 'top group' performance, whereas a short ray means 'weak' performance. A missing sunray indicates that the specific data indicator is not available. An institution's performance in an indicator can be identified by moving the cursor over the rays. A key guard for the sunburst chart is provided here .

The research activity is primarily focused in the areas of conservation biology, and includes research on genetic diversity and conservation ecology of many endangered organisms and on the health of terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Therefore, the approach in solving conservation problems is multidisciplinary and the most modern molecular methods, remote sensing systems, and population and spatial analysis are used. Researchers work in a wider Mediterranean area and are among the leading experts in the international scientific environment.

The research group at the Department is one of the two world centres in the field of algebraic graph theory which lies on the border between algebra and graph theory and may be described as the investigation of symmetry and regularity properties of graphs, using algebraic methods from group theory, linear algebra and representation theory. Other areas of specialization are: mathematical biology, numerical analysis, functional analysis, linear algebra, game theory, combinatorial optimization, statistics, cryptography, financial mathematics and computer security.

The research group is one of the two world centres in the field of algebraic graph theory. Other areas of mathematics are also represented (c.f. Question 29). The Department is involved in international cooperation and hosted 44 visiting professors/researchers in 2017/18, while it also organized 6 international scientific conferences. Research connections are maintained with colleagues from esteemed universities worldwide. Due to a strong research activity, in 2018 Center of Cryptography was established. Cryptography is offered also as study field on BSc, MSc and PhD level.

Courses are awarded with 6 ECTS and are mostly elective, covering various mathematical areas. Special emphasis is given to discrete mathematics and algebra. Elective courses are often given by guest lecturers thus acquainting students with the recent developments in the field. Through their thesis, students can be introduced into research. Courses within applied mathematics, suitable for students interested in the finance and the economy, are also offered. Graduates opt also for careers not directly related to Mathematics. In the year 2018/19 we are offering 6 study fields.

The first two years are mainly devoted to learning and consolidating the fundamentals of analysis, algebra, discrete mathematics, numerical computing. During the entire study, students complete 30 courses (21 compulsory and 9 elective), all awarded with 6 ECTS-credits. Computer Science subjects are offered as elective courses, although there is already a strong interlacement with CS also in mandatory courses. Intertwined with mathematics is also the study programme Mathematics in Economics and Finance. In the year 2018/19, we offer 3 study fields within the programme.

UP FHS is especially active in the area of biomedical applications of electroporation, the development of diagnostic tests to establish infections of orthopedic prostheses, and establishing predictive factors for obesity at biochemical and genetic levels. Moreover, we perform research work that tries to establish the effect of nutrition, sport and physical activity on health maintenance. The use of ICT and simulations for learning and teaching in nursing, for e-learning and for use brain training programs with sources to ensure the highest quality research possible.
