U-Multirank's unique 'Sunburst chart' gives an illustration of a university's performance profile across the five U-Multirank dimensions. These are indicated in different colours. For instance, the teaching and learning dimension is symbolised by the colour green. Each 'sunray' represents one of the thirty plus U-Multirank indicators. The longer the ray, the better the performance of an institution on the selected indicator: a full-length ray stands for 'top group' performance, whereas a short ray means 'weak' performance. A missing sunray indicates that the specific data indicator is not available. An institution's performance in an indicator can be identified by moving the cursor over the rays. A key guard for the sunburst chart is provided here .

The primary mandate of the Department of Biology is to provide excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Department offers a comprehensive program, which exposes students to the full range of biological sciences. Our undergraduate three-year curriculum introduces students to modern studies in general, molecular, cell, and environmental biology. It also emphasizes active, hands-on experience with modern technology. Small class sizes with an emphasis on laboratories and tutorials foster ongoing, productive interactions between students and faculty.

The Department offers a two-year graduate program leading to the MSc degree in Biology and provides training in many areas mainly in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Immunology, and Microbiology. The emphasis in our program is on development of the intellectual and technical skills necessary for independent research. Formal course requirements are largely intended to fill gaps in the student’s background and to bring him/her up to date with the most recent findings in the appropriate research areas. A major part of the program is a thesis embodying original research work.

Learning and teaching are continuously enhanced by engaging students in different activities including interaction with professionals. These engagements can be categorized in two aspects. The first one embraces different kinds of activities related to curricula, while the second category is related to co-curricular activities aiming to familiarize students with the practical aspect of business by interacting with professionals from different business disciplines. These opportunities enable an anchored learning experience, by helping students develop valuable skills, knowledge and competencies.

Our education system embraces a theoretical and clinical components aiming at developing the core competencies of the students. The education is based on the exposure to multiple approaches that are interactive and participatory. This includes: lectures, group work, debriefing exercises, and hands-on experiences in lab and real-life situations. We encourage students to be self-learners and to develop their critical thinking and clinical judgment, research, cognitive and psycho-motor capacities. This is ensured through one to one mentoring and continuous follow-up.
