U-Multirank's unique 'Sunburst chart' gives an illustration of a university's performance profile across the five U-Multirank dimensions. These are indicated in different colours. For instance, the teaching and learning dimension is symbolised by the colour green. Each 'sunray' represents one of the thirty plus U-Multirank indicators. The longer the ray, the better the performance of an institution on the selected indicator: a full-length ray stands for 'top group' performance, whereas a short ray means 'weak' performance. A missing sunray indicates that the specific data indicator is not available. An institution's performance in an indicator can be identified by moving the cursor over the rays. A key guard for the sunburst chart is provided here .

One of the most important advantages of the specialisation, compared to traditional IT specialisations, is the close combination of software and hardware, writing software for real production processes or objects. This allows graduates to work successfully as software and hardware developers for robotics, embedded systems, cars, smart homes, take management positions in automation and metrology departments, as well as to realize their potential as project managers, software testers, system administrators, etc.

In choosing strategic research areas it is important on the one hand to relate to themes with a long term societal effect, and on the other hand, to provide for long term market needs with a significant impact. The relevance to societal or market needs is also important in order to make it more easy to obtain solid funding for the research. This funding is an important condition towards relations in the market and society. Furthermore connections with the developments in the region are important. The chosen themes have been selected on the basis of the input of the chairs.
