U-Multirank's unique 'Sunburst chart' gives an illustration of a university's performance profile across the five U-Multirank dimensions. These are indicated in different colours. For instance, the teaching and learning dimension is symbolised by the colour green. Each 'sunray' represents one of the thirty plus U-Multirank indicators. The longer the ray, the better the performance of an institution on the selected indicator: a full-length ray stands for 'top group' performance, whereas a short ray means 'weak' performance. A missing sunray indicates that the specific data indicator is not available. An institution's performance in an indicator can be identified by moving the cursor over the rays. A key guard for the sunburst chart is provided here .

The curricula are focused on civil infrastructures giving to the students a wide expertise in the design of all the infrastructures related to water, transport and structural engineering. Specifically, the BD course is one of the few in Italy focusing on the design of all the infrastructure of int egrated water cycle from water supply to water treatment. The availability of highly advanced laboratories, especially in the field of seismic engineering, helps the students to mix theoretical studies and practical applications.

The research activities are focused in two big areas: experimental and numerical research. The faculty is divided in four research groups focusing on seismic engineering, transport engineering, water engineering and geotechnical engineering. Each group runs both experimental and numerical research dealing with natural risk management, infrastructure maintenance, infrastructure management and optimisation. Many research projects are run with the cooperation of enterprises and stakeholders in order to give rapid practical application to the results of university research.

The course offers specializations in hydraulic, structural and infrastructural engineering. Practical and interdisciplinary specialization of students is guaranteed by means of five group design exercises covering hydraulic infrastructures, roads, civil structures, landslides mitigation and water treatment. Hands-on experiences are carried out in the 7 laboratories that are used both for teaching and for research. Research excellence was stated by National Research Agencies in 20127 evaluating the university at the 17th place in Italy in this field.

The practical and career guidance is aimed to define a figure "specialist" having a wide spectrum of knowledge and skills related to the design, construction, management and maintenance of the Major Civil Infrastructures. Particularly interesting is the recent realization of new structures of excellence for services of study and bibliographic reference (the new Athenaeum Library), and for research activities: the KORE-Platform (Laboratories for Civil Engineering) and LEDA (Laboratory of Earthquake Engineering and Dynamic Analysis).

The research activities can be grouped into: experimental and numerical analysis of materials, structures and systems and human factor and pilot workload estimation. In detail, smart structures and materials are experimentally and numerically investigated and are applied for structural health monitoring systems. Modeling and simulation research activity also concerns the optimization and the statistical robustness analysis of aeronautical control system. Pilot workload is estimated by means of simulated flight and biometric sensors.
