U-Multirank's unique 'Sunburst chart' gives an illustration of a university's performance profile across the five U-Multirank dimensions. These are indicated in different colours. For instance, the teaching and learning dimension is symbolised by the colour green. Each 'sunray' represents one of the thirty plus U-Multirank indicators. The longer the ray, the better the performance of an institution on the selected indicator: a full-length ray stands for 'top group' performance, whereas a short ray means 'weak' performance. A missing sunray indicates that the specific data indicator is not available. An institution's performance in an indicator can be identified by moving the cursor over the rays. A key guard for the sunburst chart is provided here .

The department of biology is characterized by applied and basic research, which has traditionally been strongly characterized by interdisciplinary work. There is strong cooperation in teaching and research with the Aachen University Hospital, the Helmholtz Centres in Jülich and Leipzig, the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biotechnology and Applied Ecology (IME), the Leibniz Institute DWI and the Engineering and Geosciences of the RWTH. Students are supported by UROP internships, among other things, integrated into active research at a very early stage.

Biology at the RWTH is integrated into a scientific landscape characterized by natural and engineering sciences. Accordingly, the study, research and profiling opportunities are broadly diversified. Characteristic for the Master's programme in Biology are the strongly interdisciplinary courses offered and the free choice of a major field of study. Internships and dissertations are offered through a variety of cooperations and research alliances, which enable Master students to participate in current projects.

The MSc intensifies studies in four different research fields: red, gree, and white biotechnology and process engineering. The Master course of study “Molecular and Applied Biotechnology” was designed within the interdisciplinary collaboration involving the engineering sciences at RWTH Aachen to blend the natural sciences and strong bioengineering components. In addition to molecular biology subjects, process engineering basics, reaction engineering and bioreactor technology are the main cornerstones of the training for this continuing training in the Master’s program.

The Master's program in Ecotoxicology offered at the RWTH has a unique proposition in Germany and is specifically designed to meet the demand for modern ecotoxicologists. Teaching is supported by lecturers from industry. Ecotoxicology is an interdisciplinary science made up of biology, toxicology, and environmental chemistry, that deals with the effects of substances on the living environment. The Master's course of study in ecotoxicology differs from the Master's in biology through its clear and expansive focus on the environmental sciences.

The Department of Chemistry offers an extensive program in chemistry at bachelor (3 years), master (2 years) and PhD levels. While the bachelor program covers all subjects of modern chemistry, the master program offers the opportunity to select two specializations and also gain international/industry experience in three research projects. A strong focus on hands-on laboratory-based chemistry training is an integral part of all degree programs. Hence, all students are provided access to recently refurbished and well equipped teaching laboratories.

In all bachelor's or master's programs we offer high-calibre academic qualifications with practical experience from the beginning. About one-fifth of the students come from all over the world. A highly international environment and multicultural diversity all contribute to a stimulating learning atmosphere. Intense student support by the professors, a network of partner universities in several countries and intense contacts to our cooperartion partners provide the opportunity of gaining international study and work experience.

In the Computer Science Department about 30 research groups are working in different research areas. Most of these issues are of particular social and global relevance such as our commitment to international climate or aerospace research. Top-level research, international projects and interdisciplinary collaboration shape our academic profile and form the basis of our success in the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments. The department participates in two of three clusters of excellence and in the Graduate School of the Excellence Initiative.
