U-Multirank's unique 'Sunburst chart' gives an illustration of a university's performance profile across the five U-Multirank dimensions. These are indicated in different colours. For instance, the teaching and learning dimension is symbolised by the colour green. Each 'sunray' represents one of the thirty plus U-Multirank indicators. The longer the ray, the better the performance of an institution on the selected indicator: a full-length ray stands for 'top group' performance, whereas a short ray means 'weak' performance. A missing sunray indicates that the specific data indicator is not available. An institution's performance in an indicator can be identified by moving the cursor over the rays. A key guard for the sunburst chart is provided here .

The Department of Linguistics attaches great importance to research-based teaching and solid methodological training. We have developed courses that cover a wide range of methodological tools and plan to expand them: Aspects of data collection (corpus analysis, experimental methods including psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic techniques), data modeling and derivation (statistics, formal methods) and methods for automatic processing of human language and AI applications.

In addition to core subjects (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics), the programme also offers a broad spectrum of courses in specialised methods and applied fields. Students choose a language of specialization, in which they receive instruction in language history and practical competence. The discipline of learning to apply linguistic methods, with their abstract systems of description and modelling, challenges and develops the analytical skills of students in this programme.

Students acquire knowledge and skills to deal with many aspects of multilingualism and multilingual acquisition, including linguistic, psycholinguistic, and sociological perspectives. Acquaintance with major scientific findings and their interpretation, relevant analytical skills, and the development of critical thinking play important roles. The acquired skills and abilities are relevant for academic work as well as for scientifically informed, responsible, non-academic work.

The master's programme is concerned with a combination of theoretical and applied linguistics, focussing on the areas Human Language Processing (HLP) and Machine Language Processing (MLP). In the area of HLP students explore the psycholinguistic and neuro-cognitive bases of language, including insights from language acquisition. The area of MLP covers the coding of linguistic knowledge in abstract, formal representations so as to be able to build Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications. We teach both rule-based and machine learning (including deep learning) methods.

The subject of the programme is the theoretical description and analysis of linguistic structures and their formalization. It provides the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue an academic career and/or to deal professionally with theoretical and practical linguistic issues and to practise language-centred professions. The course imparts analytical and methodical competence and, depending on the focus, deepens the synchric and/or diachronic analysis of one or more languages. A stay abroad at a foreign university is desirable (creditable in module 6).
