U-Multirank's unique 'Sunburst chart' gives an illustration of a university's performance profile across the five U-Multirank dimensions. These are indicated in different colours. For instance, the teaching and learning dimension is symbolised by the colour green. Each 'sunray' represents one of the thirty plus U-Multirank indicators. The longer the ray, the better the performance of an institution on the selected indicator: a full-length ray stands for 'top group' performance, whereas a short ray means 'weak' performance. A missing sunray indicates that the specific data indicator is not available. An institution's performance in an indicator can be identified by moving the cursor over the rays. A key guard for the sunburst chart is provided here .

The research at the Department of Chemistry is unique in virtue of its diversity, interdisciplinarity, and collegiality. Our focus areas are polymers, biomolecules, colloidal materials, functional catalysis design, and novel natural substance synthesis. We have also earned an international reputation for developing methods of spectroscopic structure analysis. Our interdisciplinary orientation manifests in large cooperative projects (e.g., SFB 840 From particulate nanosystems to mesotechnology) and the bundling of expertise in Key Labs and various research centers.

This research-oriented program conveys detailed knowledge about synthesis, analysis, and structure of low molecular weight compounds (e.g., natural products, drugs, functional molecules) and about their interaction with macromolecular targets. Taking advantage of the diverse range of interdisciplinary modules, the graduates acquire key competencies in modern synthetic chemistry and an understanding of the interactions between chemical compounds and biological systems. This paves the way for a career in classical chemistry, but also for life, agro and health sciences.

The bachelor studies provide a basic understanding of all subareas of chemistry with specialization in colloid and polymer chemistry and polymer technology. The course qualifies students for tasks in research and development in the chemical industry, especially in medium-sized companies. Also, it qualifies for advanced chemistry-related masters or doctoral studies. A characteristic feature is the early contact of students with industrial practice in the field of polymers and colloids.

A special feature of the programme is its interdisciplinary orientation with alternative application subjects: Bioinformatics (applies methods of computer science to the storage, processing and organization of biological data), Engineering Informatics (applies methods of computer science to the development of technical systems) and Environmental Informatics (modelling, simulation, and analysis of ecosystems). The application subject has a greater significance compared to typical computer science programmes.

Basic competences in both practical and theoretical computer science are taught. Elective courses offer sufficient opportunities for in-depth study. The range of courses in computer science is supplemented by courses in mathematics, in the application subject as well as in the field of general studies. Primarily the terminology and methodology of an application subject are imparted, so that computer scientists acquire general competences in application-related work, which can be transferred to other fields of application.
