U-Multirank's unique 'Sunburst chart' gives an illustration of a university's performance profile across the five U-Multirank dimensions. These are indicated in different colours. For instance, the teaching and learning dimension is symbolised by the colour green. Each 'sunray' represents one of the thirty plus U-Multirank indicators. The longer the ray, the better the performance of an institution on the selected indicator: a full-length ray stands for 'top group' performance, whereas a short ray means 'weak' performance. A missing sunray indicates that the specific data indicator is not available. An institution's performance in an indicator can be identified by moving the cursor over the rays. A key guard for the sunburst chart is provided here .

Modern teaching concepts are used to give a sound basic grounding as well as in-depth knowledge in Biology resulting in the possibility of specialization in different biological areas. The education is highly research-oriented and a strong emphasis is placed on practical training using cutting-edge technologies in modern and well-equipped laboratories with small groups. The relatively small size of the Faculty with a very good lecturer-to-student-ratio means that students are treated personally and not lost in an anonymous crowd.

Research at the Faculty of Biology addresses pressing questions in life, biomedical, and environmental sciences and uses a broad range of high-tech methods. The major research foci are related to human health (ageing, cancer, dementia, genetics, neurobiology), plant health (acclimation, crop protection, plant pathogens), and ecology (adaptation, biodiversity, climate change). Students are familiarized with a methodological repertoire extending from classical laboratory and open-field techniques to state-of-the-art methods with high throughput and single-molecule resolution.

The specialisation "Ecology" provides a deepend, scientifically founded and research-oriented education in the fields of ecology, evolution and diversity of microorganisms of all three domains of life. The students acquire knowledge in evolution and functioning/significance of biodiversity and will learn techniques to investigate mechanisms to identify and explain spatiotemporal distribution patterns of symbiotic communities and populations. The training employs cutting-edge technologies to address ecological questions and their analysis at different levels.

The specialisation "Microbial and Plant Biotechnology" provides a deepened, scientifically founded education in the biotechnological use of microorganisms & plants. The students acquire knowledge in the molecular biology of pro- and eukaryotic cells, and learn modern methods in their investigation and genetic manipulation. They become familiar with the concepts of systems biology and bioinformatics, and their practical application. The degree holders are capable of performing scientific work independently, and to apply their knowledge in different contexts.

The profile of the department is characterized by various chemical study programmes with main focus on chemistry, food chemistry, toxicology and interdisciplinary study programmes e.g. chemistry in combination with economics and business. As a complement the department offers mentoring programms, which provide a plattform for networking among students and give opportunity to come in direct contact with the professors (mentees) of the department. For PhD candidates education in softskills is provided by the Nachwuchsring of the Technische Universität Kaiserslautern.

We offer a very flexible B.Sc./M.Sc. programme. Students can focus either in several computer science topics or in an application area. More than 20 professors cover a wide range of topics. Most of our Master students come from abroad. Therefore, our M.Sc. programme is taught completely in English. For excellent young up-and-coming scientists the department is one of the first locations in Germany to offer a PhD program which is open to students with a B.Sc.
